This fifth volume brings to a close the grand saga of the Mahabharata. we race through eleven action-packed cantos. Mighty wickets fall in quick succession. Karna and Salya meet their end. Bhima fulfils his terrible twin vows. Lying on the bed of arrows, waiting for Uttarayana, Bhishma instructs Yudhishthira in the art and science of Dharma. Reluctantly Yudhishtira accepts the crown and performs the hourse-sacrifice to expiate the guilt of war. Dhritarashtra, Gandhari, Kunthi and Vidura depart to the forest for ever. Krishna saves parikshit, arranges for the annihilation of his entire clan and ascends to Vaikuntha. And after a period of beneficent rule the Pandavas too set out on the long trek to heaven.
Through the twists and turns of kaleidoscopic events the epic proves that finally Dharma alone abides.
